In the near future, Google Maps might store your navigation updates so you won't lose them

You'll understand why the most recent Google Maps experiment might be helpful if you've ever had a live guidance system disappear from your screen while traveling. For instructions, a few users are now seeing Live Updates, which maintain progress highlighted on the screen while you're on the road.

We discovered the feature a few days ago when user @slaydelulu on X sent us a tip. A few more reports have now surfaced, proving that it isn't limited to Android Canary test releases. Screenshots from Pixel and Samsung phones running the Android 16 QPR2 beta have been uploaded by a number of users, indicating that Google is beginning to broaden testing. The screenshots show Maps notifications designated as Live Updates.

Android uses live updates to display time-sensitive information in a persistent, easily readable notification. They remain fixed so you can easily check your route or remaining travel time rather than vanishing or moving down the line. Drivers who might have switched to another app might find this very helpful.

This rollout is still far from complete. The fact that the feature is still only visible to a select few suggests that Google is now conducting a very limited test. Please leave a comment below if Live Updates for Google Maps have arrived on your device, and we'll keep a look out for any additional reports.
