Next week is Apple's 'awe dropping' event for the iPhone 17 — What to anticipate on September 9th

Apple's "Awe dropping" event, where the firm is expected to announce the iPhone 17, is just one week away. There aren't many hints about this year's theme, "Awe dropping," which was mentioned in Apple's August 26 media invitations, but perhaps the "dropping" alludes to lightweight gadgets falling in some way? In any case, Cupertino will webcast the event on YouTube on September 9 at 1:00 PM ET. We'll have three Engadget team members reporting and liveblogging from Apple Park, as well as to give their hands-on impressions, so make sure you come back here for the latest coverage.

With a high likelihood of a whole new, ultra-thin iPhone joining the company's range, this year is looking to be different from the recent September product rollouts. New Apple Watch models, such as the first Ultra model that is actually new in two years, and possibly the eagerly anticipated AirPods Pro 3 are also on the horizon.
Mark Gurman, an Apple correspondent for Bloomberg, was the finest person to give us a detailed overview of what to expect at the event. Gurman discussed his predictions for the upcoming thin iPhone (which everyone already refers to as the iPhone Air) during his recent guest appearance on the Engadget Podcast. He included his thoughts on the anticipated camera and battery tradeoffs.
With an anticipated thickness of approximately 5.55 mm, the iPhone Air would surpass the previous svelteness champion, the 2014 iPhone 6, which had a thickness of 6.9 mm. Since then, they have only gotten chunkier. (The depth of the iPhone 16 Pro is 8.25 mm.) Additionally, the Air would directly compete with Samsung's Galaxy S25 Edge, which we thought was more than just a gimmick.
However, the small design of the iPhone Air will probably result in some tradeoffs. It is said to have a smaller battery and a single 48 MP camera. Thus, be prepared for a fashionable phone that... won't be for everyone.
Performance enhancements and some design changes might be available in the Pro lineup. There are rumors that the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will use aluminum instead of titanium. Additionally, they observed the rear camera array grow to fill a whole "island" that covers the majority of the phone's back. As before, it is anticipated to have three cameras, but there have been several reports that it will also contain an upgraded telephoto camera. Its digital zooming and cropping capabilities would be strengthened if the zoom lens could climb to 48MP. Additionally, the phones might have an anti-glare covering like those on iPads.
