A version of Instagram's app has been released that is tailored for the iPad's larger screen.
Because consumers use larger screens, like the iPad's, for "lean back entertainment," the firm stated in a blog post on Wednesday, September 3, that the new Instagram for iPad launches with Reels, the app's short video format.
According to the post, the app also makes it simple for users to access messages and Stories.
According to the post, Instagram for iPad also has a "Following" tab that allows users to choose how to view and prioritize content from the accounts they follow, a layout that shows the message and notification tabs, and the option to expand comments while viewing reels while maintaining the reel's full size.
The post stated, "It's the Instagram you love, with more room to play."
Instagram for iPad is currently available on the App Store and is being rolled out globally. According to the report, an Android tablet design is on the horizon.
This is Instagram's first iPad-specific software, according to Reuters on Wednesday. The iPad version of the app previously used a scaled-up iPhone version, which has long been criticized for having hazy images and lacking capabilities.
According to the article, Instagram's emphasis on Reels in the latest version of the app coincided with TikTok's growing competitiveness.
In July, parent company Meta reported that 3.48 billion people use its family of apps—Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Messenger—each day, a 6% increase from the previous year.
In a July 31 earnings release, the company also stated that its early "business AIs" on Instagram are finding product-market fit, particularly for small merchants, and that its improved ranking system increased time spent on Instagram by 6% and that its new recommendation models increased ad conversions on Instagram by 5%.
As part of its long-term goal to mainstream immersive computing, Meta said in June that it was testing 3D images created by artificial intelligence on Instagram via the Meta Quest augmented reality/virtual reality headset.
When the business announced its testing, it stated, "Reality Labs is partnering with Instagram to add a little more magic to the moments you share."
